The Hunger Games – sentimental feelings
Author: Suzanne Collines
"The Hunger Games" review: Book Shopping
First, did you read the new book(Catching Fire) of Suzanne Collines ? that is the second of hunger games, it is as wonderful as this book.
Suzanne Collins narrative here has an immediacy to it that, when combined with the very dramatic life-or-death plot, is incredibly compelling. It’s entertaining, and incredibly disturbing all at once.
The narrator, Katniss, on a first impression can come off as cold, disconnected, even lacking in a personality. But as the story progressed and I learned more about her life, it became apparent that her tone is that of a survivalist. She does in fact have a personality and is quite capable of emotion. It just takes strong events to bring them out, and even then, while she’s fighting for her life in the arena, it’s abundantly clear that sentimental feelings are what get a person killed. So much happens to Katniss in such a short period of time that there’s little room for feelings in the first book. There are some hints of an inevitable love triangle and post-traumatic stress from her ordeal, but these things take a realistic amount of time to materialize. Her strategy is to survive now, and deal with it later.
By page 40, I was so emotional invested in the characters, I wept! my only complaint, is that I had not realized until the ending that this was the first in a series… so when I first discovered the book in late July, I was distressed that I would have to wait months until its next installment.
I am always on the lookout for that one story. You know what I mean. The one that gets in your head and won’t go away. The kind of book you want to put in everyone’s hands. A story that has the power to completely mesmerize and capture your imagination. The Hunger Games has done all of that for me and more. I recommended this book to everyone and even sent it out to my brother as soon as i was finished!
